What is a Scintillator?
A scintillator is a special material that emits light (scintillation) when exposed to ionizing radiation such as X-rays, gamma rays, or particles. This light is then detected by devices like photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) or photodiodes to measure the intensity and type of radiation. There are two main types of scintillators: organic (e.g., plastic or liquid) and inorganic (e.g., crystals like NaI or CsI). Due to their fast response and high sensitivity, scintillators are widely used in medical diagnostics, nuclear facilities, security systems, and scientific research.
Application of Scintillator
✅ PET scanners in medicine
Detect gamma rays from radiotracers in the body.
✅ Radiation detectors at airports
Prevent the smuggling of radioactive materials.
✅ Particle detectors in physics experiments
Measure high-energy particles.
✅ Radiation monitoring in nuclear plants
Ensure worker and environmental safety.
