What is a Isobutene?
Isobutene, also known as 2-methylpropene (C₄H₈), is an unsaturated hydrocarbon and a structural isomer of butene. It is a colorless, flammable gas at room temperature with a faint, ether-like odor. Isobutene is widely used in the petrochemical industry as a key intermediate for the production of polyisobutylene (PIB) and butyl rubber—materials used in tires, automotive parts, adhesives, and sealants.
It is also a precursor for MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether), a gasoline additive that boosts octane levels. Due to its reactive double bond, isobutene is ideal for polymerization and other chemical synthesis processes. Because of its high flammability, careful handling is required in well-ventilated areas away from ignition sources.
