What is a Indium (symbol: In, atomic number: 49) ?
Indium (symbol: In, atomic number: 49) is a silvery-white, soft, and ductile metal element belonging to Group 13 of the periodic table. It is not found in its pure form in nature, but rather as a trace element in zinc and lead ores. Discovered in the early 1900s, indium plays a crucial role in the electronics, display, and semiconductor industries.
With good electrical and thermal conductivity and a low melting point (156.6°C), indium is commonly used in solder and low-melting alloys. Its compound indium tin oxide (ITO) is widely used in transparent conductive films for LCDs and touchscreens.
Indium is also important in radiation detectors, optoelectronics, and solar cells. While its toxicity is relatively low, proper precautions should be taken when handling its dust or fumes.
