What is a Chloride?
Chloride refers to compounds containing chlorine in its -1 oxidation state (Cl⁻), most commonly found as salts with various metals. The most well-known chloride is sodium chloride (NaCl), or table salt, which is essential in food and preservation. Chlorides are also important in industrial processes. For example, calcium chloride (CaCl₂) is used as a de-icing agent and drying agent, while ferric chloride (FeCl₃) is used in water treatment and chemical synthesis.
Although chloride compounds are generally stable, excessive intake, especially of sodium chloride, can lead to health issues like high blood pressure. Additionally, chlorides can be corrosive to metals.
