What is a Chloroform (CHCl₃) ?
Chloroform (CHCl₃) is a colorless organic compound with a sweet, distinctive odor. It consists of one carbon atom bonded to one hydrogen atom and three chlorine atoms. Once widely used as an anesthetic, its use has been largely discontinued due to concerns about toxicity and carcinogenicity. Today, chloroform is mainly used as an industrial solvent and in the production of pesticides, dyes, and pharmaceutical intermediates. High exposure can affect the central nervous system, liver, and kidneys. Adequate ventilation and protective measures are required. It is persistent in the environment and poses a risk of water pollution.
