What is a Cyclooctane (C₈H₁₆) ?
Cyclooctane (C₈H₁₆) is an organic compound consisting of eight carbon atoms and sixteen hydrogen atoms, forming a saturated hydrocarbon with a cyclic structure. Unlike straight-chain hydrocarbons (alkanes), cyclooctane forms an eight-membered ring, giving it unique physical properties. It is a colorless liquid with a slight aromatic odor. Cyclooctane is relatively stable and is used industrially as an intermediate in chemical syntheses, as well as in petroleum-based products, including solvents and fuels. While it is considered to have low toxicity, it should be handled with care to avoid prolonged inhalation or exposure to high concentrations. It is highly flammable, and appropriate precautions should be taken during use. Its environmental impact is generally low, but improper disposal could lead to water contamination.
