What is a Cerium (Ce)?
Cerium (Ce) is a chemical element with atomic number 58, belonging to the lanthanide series of rare-earth elements. It is a silvery-white metal that readily oxidizes in air, forming cerium oxide (CeO₂). Cerium is highly reactive and plays a key role as a catalyst in many industrial applications. It is widely used in catalytic converters for gasoline engines, where cerium compounds, especially cerium oxide, help reduce harmful emissions from exhaust gases. Additionally, cerium is used in glass and ceramics to enhance transparency and in high-temperature applications such as ignition devices and casting materials. Due to its strong reducing power, cerium is also used in chemical experiments and analyses, particularly in redox reactions where cerium (IV) is reduced to cerium (III).
