What is a Titania (TiO₂)?

Titania (TiO₂), also known as titanium dioxide, is an inorganic compound consisting of titanium (Ti) and oxygen (O). It is a white, chemically stable powder with widespread applications. Naturally, it occurs in the minerals rutile, anatase, and brookite. Titania is most commonly used as a white pigment in paints, cosmetics, plastics, paper, glass, and food products due to its excellent whiteness and durability. It is also widely used in sunscreens due to its ability to reflect UV radiation. Additionally, titania serves as a highly effective photocatalyst, used for environmental purification and energy generation, particularly in breaking down harmful substances in the air under UV light.

Titania is generally considered safe, though inhaling large amounts of its powder can irritate the respiratory system. Appropriate protective measures, such as masks and proper ventilation, are recommended during handling. When in contact with skin or eyes, it can cause mild irritation.
