What is a Phenylethylamine (PEA, C₈H₁₁N)?
Phenylethylamine (PEA, C₈H₁₁N) is an organic compound composed of a benzene ring attached to an ethyl chain with an amine group (–NH₂). It belongs to the group of monoamine neurotransmitters, naturally occurring in the human brain.
PEA plays a role in mood, attention, arousal, and emotional responses, and is sometimes referred to as the "love molecule" or "feel-good chemical" due to its association with feelings of pleasure and affection. It is also famously found in chocolate, which is believed to contribute to its mood-enhancing effects.
However, PEA is rapidly broken down in the body by the enzyme monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B), which limits its activity. To experience noticeable effects, it is sometimes combined with MAO inhibitors in a controlled setting.
It is also used in some dietary supplements and pre-workout products, marketed for enhancing mood, focus, and energy. However, excessive use or combination with certain drugs may lead to side effects, so caution is advised.
