What is a Phenylboronic acid (C₆H₅B(OH)₂) ?
Phenylboronic acid (C₆H₅B(OH)₂) is an aromatic boronic acid consisting of a phenyl group (benzene ring) attached to a boronic acid functional group. It is a white to off-white crystalline solid and serves as a versatile intermediate in organic synthesis and materials science. One of its primary applications is in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction, where phenylboronic acid acts as the boron-containing reagent. In the presence of a palladium catalyst, it couples with aryl or vinyl halides to form carbon–carbon bonds, which is a key process in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and advanced materials.
Phenylboronic acid also exhibits the ability to bind with diols, such as those found in sugars (e.g., glucose), making it useful in glucose sensors, drug delivery systems, and bioresponsive materials. Its water solubility and pH responsiveness add to its suitability for biological applications.
It is hygroscopic and should be stored in a tightly sealed container to avoid degradation from moisture.
