What is a Fluoroglucinol (C₆H₆O₃)?
Fluoroglucinol (C₆H₆O₃) is an organic compound classified as a phenol, specifically 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene, consisting of a benzene ring with three hydroxyl (-OH) groups. Despite its name, fluoroglucinol does not contain any fluorine atoms—the name is derived from older chemical nomenclature. It appears as a white or light yellow crystalline solid, soluble in water and alcohols. Due to its phenolic hydroxyl groups, fluoroglucinol exhibits reducing properties and can form chelates with metal ions.
In medicine, fluoroglucinol is used as an antispasmodic agent, particularly for gastrointestinal and biliary tract spasms. In some countries, it is prescribed to relieve abdominal pain related to muscle contractions. In analytical chemistry, fluoroglucinol is also used as a reagent for detecting lignin in wood samples.
