What is a Phosgene?
Phosgene is an organic compound with the chemical formula COCl₂. It is a highly reactive and toxic gas, colorless and odorless, making it particularly dangerous. Historically, phosgene was used as a chemical weapon during World War I. Chemically, it is produced by the reaction of carbon dioxide (CO₂) with chlorinating agents.
Phosgene is primarily used in the organic chemical industry as an intermediate compound, particularly in the manufacturing of plastics, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides. It is also important in the synthesis of polyurethanes and polycarbonates.
Due to its high toxicity, phosgene handling requires strict safety protocols. Inhalation of phosgene can cause severe damage to the lungs and respiratory system, making protective measures essential when working with this compound.
