What is a Nitric oxide (NO)?
Nitric oxide (NO) is a colorless gas composed of nitrogen and oxygen. It occurs naturally in the atmosphere, such as from lightning or combustion at high temperatures, and can also be synthesized industrially by the oxidation of ammonia. In biological systems, nitric oxide plays a crucial role as a signaling molecule, especially in vasodilation (the widening of blood vessels) and neurotransmission. It helps regulate blood pressure and is used therapeutically in certain cardiovascular medications.
However, in high concentrations, nitric oxide is toxic. In the presence of oxygen, it can form nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), a harmful and irritating gas.
