What is a Chromium trioxide (CrO₃) ?
Chromium trioxide (CrO₃) is an inorganic compound containing hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺). It appears as dark red to purple crystalline solid and is a strong oxidizing agent. In water, it forms chromic acid (H₂CrO₄) and is involved in the production of chromates and dichromates. It is widely used in metal surface treatments such as chromate conversion coating, electropolishing, and chrome plating. Other uses include glass and plastic dyeing, and as a reagent in various oxidation reactions.
However, chromium trioxide is highly toxic and carcinogenic, and exposure can cause serious irritation to the skin and respiratory system. Proper protective equipment and ventilation are essential during handling.
