What is a Dichloromethane (CH₂Cl₂)?
Dichloromethane (CH₂Cl₂), also known as methylene chloride, is a colorless, volatile liquid with a sweet odor. It is a chlorinated organic solvent that is only slightly soluble in water but mixes well with most organic solvents. It has a low boiling point (~40°C) and is widely used due to its excellent solvency.
Main applications:
✅ Solvent in pharmaceutical and pesticide synthesis
✅ Ingredient in paint removers and adhesives
✅ Extraction solvent in analytical chemistry
✅ Formerly used as a degreasing agent
Due to its toxicity and environmental impact, the use of DCM is regulated in many countries.
