What is a Calcium hydride (CaH₂)?
Calcium hydride (CaH₂) is a white to gray crystalline solid and a powerful drying agent widely used in laboratories and chemical processes. It reacts vigorously with water to produce calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) and hydrogen gas (H₂), making it suitable for solvent drying and as a hydrogen source in experiments. Its main applications include removing moisture from organic solvents (e.g., diethyl ether, toluene) and acting as a mild reducing agent in some reactions. Due to its high reactivity, it must be stored in airtight containers and handled under dry, inert atmospheres such as nitrogen or argon.
As it can irritate the skin and eyes, protective gloves and goggles are recommended when handling.
