What is a Magnesium hydride (MgH₂) ?
Magnesium hydride (MgH₂) is a lightweight, grayish-white crystalline powder composed of magnesium and hydrogen, widely used as a hydrogen storage material and reducing agent in inorganic chemistry, and due to its reactivity with water to produce magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)₂) and hydrogen gas (H₂), it finds applications as a hydrogen source in fuel cells and renewable energy systems, as well as in organic synthesis as a hydrogen donor or dehydrating agent, and because of its high reactivity, it must be stored and handled under an inert atmosphere, with precautions such as protective equipment and dry storage, while its high specific energy from being a light metal compound and relatively low cost makes it a promising candidate for future energy technologies.
