What is a Ethylene carbonate (EC) ?
Ethylene carbonate (EC) is a colorless, slightly fragrant cyclic ester with a high dielectric constant and high boiling point, synthesized from ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide, and is widely used as a key solvent in lithium-ion battery electrolytes due to its ability to enhance ionic conductivity, ensure stability, and facilitate the formation of the SEI (solid electrolyte interface) layer, playing a crucial role in battery performance; in addition, it serves as a raw material for resins, lubricants, surfactants, and cosmetics, and is gaining attention as a green solvent thanks to its relatively low toxicity and good biodegradability, though caution is required when handling due to the risk of decomposition or ignition at high temperatures, requiring storage in sealed containers, use in well-ventilated areas, and the installation of explosion-proof equipment.
