What is a Acetonitrile (CH₃CN)?
Acetonitrile (CH₃CN) is a colorless, low-viscosity liquid with a faint ether-like odor. It is the simplest organic nitrile, containing a −C≡N (nitrile) functional group. Highly polar and miscible with water and many organic solvents, acetonitrile is widely used as a polar aprotic solvent. Key applications include use as a solvent in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), reaction medium in organic synthesis, intermediate for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, and in battery electrolytes. Its high solvency and volatility make it valuable in both industrial and laboratory settings.
Due to its flammability and toxicity, proper ventilation and protective equipment (e.g., gloves, goggles) are recommended when handling acetonitrile. High exposure can cause dizziness, nausea, and respiratory irritation.
