What is a Adenosine?
Adenosine is a nucleoside composed of the base adenine linked to a ribose sugar. It plays a critical role in many biological processes, especially as a component of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and adenosine monophosphate (AMP), which are central to cellular energy transfer and signaling. In the nervous system, adenosine acts as a neuromodulator, promoting sleep, reducing arousal, dilating blood vessels, and regulating heart rate. Medically, it is used as a drug to treat certain types of supraventricular tachycardia, helping to restore normal heart rhythm by temporarily slowing electrical conduction through the AV node.
Adenosine is highly water-soluble and typically appears as a white or colorless crystalline powder. While generally safe at physiological levels, pharmaceutical use requires careful monitoring for side effects and dosage. It is widely used in biochemical and cardiovascular research.
