What is a Adrenaline (also known as epinephrine)?
Adrenaline (also known as epinephrine) is a hormone and neurotransmitter secreted by the adrenal medulla. It plays a central role in the “fight or flight” response by increasing heart rate, blood pressure, airway dilation, and blood sugar levels, enabling the body to react quickly to stress or danger. Clinically, adrenaline is best known as the active ingredient in epinephrine auto-injectors (e.g., EpiPen) used to treat anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction. It is also used during cardiac arrest as part of emergency resuscitation protocols and in emergencies such as asthma attacks.
Because it is rapidly metabolized in the body, adrenaline must be administered quickly, usually via injection or inhalation. Side effects may include palpitations, anxiety, and tremors, so careful dosage and monitoring are essential.
