What is a Ammonia?
Ammonia (chemical formula: NH₃) is a colorless gas with a strong, pungent odor. It is a highly important compound in chemistry, primarily used in the production of fertilizers. Ammonia is synthesized industrially through the reaction of nitrogen and hydrogen, and it plays a crucial role in various chemical processes. Ammonia is highly soluble in water, and the aqueous solution forms ammonium ions (NH₄⁺), giving it alkaline properties. This characteristic makes ammonia useful in water treatment, as well as in chemical reactions as an intermediate.
Ammonia also has various industrial applications, including refrigeration, pharmaceutical production, and the manufacture of plastics. However, it is a highly toxic substance, and exposure to high concentrations can cause severe damage to the respiratory system and eyes. Therefore, handling ammonia requires extreme caution.
