What is a Isophthalic Acid?
Isophthalic acid (chemical formula: C8H6O4) is an aromatic carboxylic acid with two carboxyl groups (-COOH) attached to a benzene ring. It is a stable compound widely used in industrial applications. One of its primary uses is in the production of polyesters, plastics, and fibers. In particular, isophthalic acid plays a significant role in the production of thermally resistant, chemically resistant, and mechanically strong plastic products, such as those made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It is also an essential intermediate in chemical synthesis, used in the manufacture of paints, adhesives, and fiber processing.
Although isophthalic acid is relatively safe to handle, strict regulations regarding the by-products generated during its production require careful handling. Moreover, recycling and proper disposal methods are critical to minimize its environmental impact.
