What is a Uracil?
Uracil is a pyrimidine base with the chemical formula C4H4N2O2. It is one of the fundamental components of RNA (ribonucleic acid) and plays a crucial role in the transmission of genetic information. Unlike DNA, which contains thymine (T), RNA uses uracil (U) in its place. This distinction reflects the different functions of DNA and RNA in cellular processes. In RNA, uracil pairs with adenine (A), forming the uracil-adenine base pair. This pairing ensures the accurate transmission of genetic information within the cell, leading to the synthesis of proteins. Additionally, like purine bases, uracil is involved in the synthesis of energy molecules such as ATP and GTP, which are essential for cellular function.
In the medical field, uracil derivatives are sometimes used as antiviral drugs or anticancer agents. Specifically, drugs based on uracil can inhibit the growth of cancer cells, though side effects such as gastrointestinal issues and a decrease in white blood cell count have been reported.
