What is a Ethane (C₂H₆)?
Ethane (C₂H₆) is a colorless, odorless, flammable gas and a type of hydrocarbon. It is one of the main components of natural gas and is obtained during the refining process of petroleum and natural gas. Ethane is classified as an alkane and is the simplest saturated hydrocarbon with two carbon atoms. Ethane is primarily used as a feedstock for the production of ethylene, a key chemical used in the production of plastics and other chemical products. Ethylene is produced by cracking ethane at high temperatures. In addition, ethane can be used as a refrigerant in cooling systems and refrigerators.
At room temperature, ethane exists as a gas and is colorless and odorless. However, it can be liquefied by cooling. Natural gas, which contains ethane, is widely used as a fuel for residential and industrial energy needs. While ethane is an important fuel, it can also react with oxygen in the atmosphere to contribute to the greenhouse effect, making its management critical in relation to other gases like methane and ethanol.
