What is a Oxytocin?
Oxytocin is a hormone synthesized in the hypothalamus and secreted by the posterior pituitary gland. It plays a crucial role in childbirth and breastfeeding. Its chemical formula is C43H66N12O12S2. Oxytocin promotes uterine contractions during labor and stimulates the release of milk from the mammary glands during breastfeeding. Often referred to as the "love hormone," oxytocin is known to foster intimate relationships, enhance trust, and strengthen social bonds. It also contributes to reducing stress and stabilizing emotions. Medically, it is administered to induce labor or to promote uterine contractions after childbirth.
However, excessive doses of oxytocin can lead to overly strong uterine contractions, and careful monitoring is required during its use.
