What is a Creatinine?
Creatinine is a metabolic byproduct of creatine, which is involved in energy supply to muscles. Its chemical formula is C4H7N3O. Creatinine is produced when creatine breaks down in the body and is then excreted through the blood and urine. The concentration of creatinine in the blood is widely used as an indicator of kidney function. Creatinine is normally filtered by the kidneys and excreted in urine. When kidney function declines, the excretion of creatinine is impaired, leading to an increase in its blood concentration. Therefore, measuring creatinine levels in the blood helps assess kidney health. For example, creatinine clearance (CrCl) is a common measure used to evaluate the kidney’s filtering ability.
Creatinine is also found in urine, and 24-hour urine tests are sometimes conducted for its analysis. It plays an important role in monitoring kidney health and diagnosing diseases.
