What is a Cresol?
Cresol is an organic compound classified as a phenol derivative, also known as methylphenol. Its chemical formula is C7H8O, and it exists in three isomeric forms: ortho- (o-), meta- (m-), and para- (p-) cresol. It is a colorless to pale yellow liquid or solid with a strong, distinct odor. Cresol has potent disinfectant and antiseptic properties and is used in cresol soap solutions for hospital and agricultural sanitation. Industrially, it is a raw material in the production of resins, pesticides, and dyes. However, it can irritate the skin and mucous membranes, and precautions must be taken during handling. Since it is not easily biodegradable, environmental safety measures are also essential.
