What is a Potassium Chromate?
Potassium chromate (K₂CrO₄) is an inorganic compound that appears as a bright yellow crystalline powder. It is highly soluble in water and acts as a powerful oxidizing agent. It contains hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺), which is known to be toxic and carcinogenic, requiring careful handling.
It is commonly used as an oxidizing agent in analytical chemistry, particularly as an indicator in redox titrations. Other uses include leather tanning, pigment and dye production, and metal surface treatment (chromate conversion coatings). It is also employed in the quantitative analysis of lead. Due to its strong oxidizing nature, it must be stored away from flammable materials.
