What is a Chloroacetophenone (C₈H₇ClO)?
Chloroacetophenone is an organic compound primarily known as the active ingredient in CN gas, a type of tear gas. It is a colorless to pale yellow crystalline solid with a pungent odor. Used widely since the early 20th century for riot control and police/military training, it causes strong irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract—resulting in tearing, coughing, and burning sensations. Due to safety concerns, CN gas has largely been replaced by CS gas in many countries.
Proper handling requires personal protective equipment and ventilation, as exposure can lead to serious health effects.
