What is a Potassium Silicate (K₂SiO₃)?
Potassium silicate is an inorganic compound composed of potassium and silica. It is commonly referred to as “water glass” and exists as a white solid or a clear, viscous liquid. The general formula is K₂SiO₃ or K₂O·nSiO₂. It is soluble in water and used in various industries such as ceramics, fireproofing, adhesives, concrete hardeners, detergents, and agricultural fertilizers. In agriculture, it is applied as a liquid fertilizer to enhance plant resistance to pests and diseases, especially in crops like rice and bananas.
It is also a key component in fire-resistant coatings and rust-preventive paints, owing to its alkaline nature which helps inhibit metal corrosion.
