What is a Calcium Silicate (CaSiO₃)?
Calcium silicate is an inorganic compound composed of calcium and silica. It typically appears as a white solid and exists in both anhydrous and hydrated forms (e.g., Ca₂SiO₄·xH₂O). It is highly valued for its thermal insulation and fire-resistant properties. It is widely used in construction materials, including fireproof boards, insulation products, and as a substitute for asbestos. It is also used as a food additive (anticaking agent, E552) to prevent powdered food products from clumping.
Due to its excellent heat resistance, it is suitable for insulating pipes and equipment exposed to high temperatures. However, handling precautions are necessary, as inhalation of fine dust may pose health risks.
