What is a Cyanuric Acid?
Cyanuric acid (C3H3N3O3) is an organic compound that contains nitrogen and oxygen. It appears as a white crystalline or powdery solid. Chemically, it consists of a triazine ring and is primarily used in water treatment and pool management. Cyanuric acid is best known as a stabilizer for chlorine systems used in pools and spas. Cyanuric acid binds with chlorine to prevent the evaporation of chlorine, allowing its disinfecting effect to last longer. This helps to reduce the consumption of chlorine and decreases the frequency of chlorine replenishment. It is particularly effective in outdoor pools where sunlight breaks down chlorine quickly, as it helps maintain chlorine efficacy for a longer time.
In addition to water treatment, cyanuric acid is also used in agriculture, including in pesticides and herbicides. However, its most common and widely recognized use is in pool care and water treatment.
