What is a 1,2-Dichloroethane (DCE)?
1,2-Dichloroethane (chemical formula: C2H4Cl2) is a chlorinated hydrocarbon where two hydrogen atoms of ethane are replaced with chlorine atoms. It is a colorless, volatile liquid with a sweet, chloroform-like odor and is the most common isomer of dichloroethane. The primary application of 1,2-dichloroethane is in the production of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), the key precursor to polyvinyl chloride (PVC). PVC is used widely in construction materials, pipes, cable insulation, and packaging products. As such, DCE is an essential intermediate in the PVC industry.
In addition, 1,2-dichloroethane serves as an organic solvent, capable of dissolving fats, oils, waxes, resins, and other organic compounds. It has been used in degreasing agents, cleaning fluids, and adhesives. However, 1,2-dichloroethane is toxic and poses significant health risks through inhalation or skin contact. Proper protective equipment and ventilation are critical when handling this substance.
