What is a Dichloroethylene (DCE)?
Dichloroethylene (C2H2Cl2) refers to a group of chlorinated unsaturated hydrocarbons, with three isomers: 1,1-dichloroethylene, cis-1,2-dichloroethylene, and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene. These isomers vary in physical and chemical properties, but all are colorless liquids with a sharp odor. 1,1-Dichloroethylene is widely used as a monomer in the production of polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), which is commonly found in food packaging films and wraps. The 1,2-isomers are more often used as solvents to dissolve fats, waxes, and resins, and in metal cleaning processes.
Due to their high volatility, these compounds evaporate quickly, making them suitable for cleaning and degreasing applications, especially in the electronics and automotive industries. However, dichloroethylenes are toxic, particularly at high concentrations. Inhalation of vapors can affect the central nervous system, and prolonged exposure may damage the liver and kidneys. Proper handling, including good ventilation and use of protective equipment, is essential when working with DCE.
