What is a Dichlorobenzene?
Dichlorobenzene (C6H4Cl2) is an aromatic compound where two chlorine atoms are substituted onto a benzene ring. There are three isomers: 1,2-dichlorobenzene (ortho), 1,3-dichlorobenzene (meta), and 1,4-dichlorobenzene (para). The most commonly used isomer is 1,4-dichlorobenzene (p-dichlorobenzene), which appears as a white crystalline solid with a strong, mothball-like odor. It is widely used as a deodorizer and moth repellent, especially in toilets, closets, and storage areas. It also serves as an intermediate in the production of dyes, pesticides, and resins.
1,2-dichlorobenzene is used mainly as a solvent for waxes, resins, and other organic materials, and also functions as a heat transfer fluid. 1,3-dichlorobenzene has fewer commercial applications but is used in specialty chemicals and intermediates. Dichlorobenzenes are volatile and potentially hazardous, especially with prolonged exposure. Inhalation can cause irritation to the respiratory system, and chronic exposure may affect the liver. Due to their low biodegradability, they pose environmental risks if improperly disposed.
