What is a Dicyandiamide (DCD)?
Dicyandiamide (chemical formula: C₂H₄N₄), often abbreviated as DCD, is a white crystalline powder that is highly soluble in water. It is a dimer of cyanamide, rich in nitrogen, and widely used in various industrial and chemical applications. One of its key uses is as a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer additive, which delays the nitrification process in soil, reducing nitrogen leaching and improving fertilizer efficiency. DCD is also an important intermediate in the production of melamine resins, epoxy resin curing agents, and flame retardants.
Additionally, it is used in adhesives, coatings, pharmaceuticals, and electronic materials. In the electronics industry, DCD can contribute to high-performance resins and circuit board components. It is also applied in textile processing and paper treatment. Dicyandiamide is relatively low in toxicity, but direct inhalation or skin contact with the powder should be avoided. Proper handling includes using protective gear and ensuring adequate ventilation and storage conditions.
