What is a Cytosine?

Cytosine is a pyrimidine base and one of the fundamental building blocks of nucleotides that make up DNA and RNA. Its chemical formula is C₄H₅N₃O, and it consists of a six-membered pyrimidine ring with an amino group (-NH₂) attached. Cytosine pairs with guanine in both DNA and RNA to form stable, complementary base pairs, contributing to the transmission of genetic information. In DNA, cytosine forms hydrogen bonds with guanine, stabilizing the double-helix structure of the molecule. During the process of transcription, cytosine in DNA is transcribed into guanine in RNA, and this complementary pairing plays a crucial role in gene expression.
