What is a Calcium Oxalate?
Calcium oxalate (chemical formula: CaC₂O₄) is a compound formed from the combination of oxalic acid and calcium. It appears as a white crystalline powder and is found widely in nature, especially in plants. Calcium oxalate is present in many plants such as spinach, raspberries, and kale, and can also be found as a mineral. It is insoluble in water. Medically, calcium oxalate is one of the main components of kidney stones and urinary tract stones. If consumed in high amounts, it can form these stones in the urinary tract, leading to pain and discomfort.
Industrially, calcium oxalate is used in the polishing and cleaning of metals, particularly for rust removal and corrosion prevention. Calcium oxalate is known to be toxic to animals, and excessive ingestion can have harmful health effects.
