What is a Sodium Thiosulfate (Na2S2O3)?
Sodium Thiosulfate (chemical formula: Na2S2O3) is a salt of sodium (Na) and thiosulfate (S2O3), existing as colorless crystals or white powder. It is highly soluble in water and is characterized by its strong reducing properties. Sodium thiosulfate has various applications in chemistry and industry. For example, it is used in photographic film development to remove excess silver salts during the process. In water treatment, it neutralizes chlorine, converting it into harmless compounds.
It also has medical uses as an antidote for cyanide poisoning. When cyanide is ingested, sodium thiosulfate reacts with it to form non-toxic substances, making it useful in treating acute cyanide poisoning. Chemically, sodium thiosulfate is also widely used as a reducing agent to prevent oxidation reactions.
