What is a Terephthalic Acid?
Terephthalic Acid is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₆H₄(CO₂H)₂, consisting of a benzene ring with two carboxyl groups (-COOH) attached. It is an important raw material in the production of polyester fibers, particularly polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is widely used in products such as plastic bottles, clothing, and filaments. Terephthalic acid is chemically stable and has high heat and chemical resistance, making it valuable in the plastics and textile industries. When melted, it undergoes a polyester reaction, forming long-chain molecules that create strong fibers and filaments.
This compound is primarily produced as a petrochemical product, synthesized through the hydrolysis and oxidation of naphtha. In addition, due to its stability, terephthalic acid is also used in some high-performance plastics and coatings.
