What is a Trichloroethylene?

Trichloroethylene is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₂HCl₃. It is a colorless liquid with a characteristic sweet odor. Historically, trichloroethylene has been widely used as a solvent, particularly for degreasing metal parts and cleaning electronic components. It has also been employed in paint thinners and adhesives. However, due to its high toxicity, potential carcinogenic properties, and significant environmental impact, its use has been heavily regulated in many countries. Trichloroethylene is known to be an ozone-depleting substance, contributing to the destruction of the ozone layer. Although it is insoluble in water, it is highly soluble in organic solvents, which has kept its use limited to specific industrial applications, where alternative substances are not viable.
