What is a Naphthoquinone (C₆H₄(CO)₂)?
Naphthoquinone (C₆H₄(CO)₂) is a derivative of naphthalene and belongs to the quinone class of compounds. It consists of a benzene ring with two carbonyl groups (C=O) attached to adjacent carbon atoms. In nature, naphthoquinone is known as a precursor to vitamin K₃ (menadione) and is widely found in plants, bacteria, and fungi. Industrially, naphthoquinone is used in the production of dyes, antibacterial agents, and pharmaceuticals. It also plays a role as an oxidizing agent in redox reactions. Different isomers of naphthoquinone, such as 2-methyl-naphthoquinone and 1,4-naphthoquinone, have distinct chemical properties and uses.
