What is a Nitroglycerin (C₃H₅N₃O₉)?
Nitroglycerin (C₃H₅N₃O₉) is a nitro compound and a derivative of glycerin. Chemically, it is a compound where all three hydroxyl groups (-OH) of glycerin (C₃H₈O₃) are replaced by nitro groups (NO₂). Nitroglycerin is well-known for its use as an explosive, but it also plays an important role as a pharmaceutical. As an explosive, nitroglycerin is used in the production of dynamite, where it is absorbed in a stabilizing substance like diatomaceous earth to make it less volatile and safer to handle. As a pharmaceutical, nitroglycerin is used in the treatment of angina pectoris (chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart) as a vasodilator, expanding blood vessels and improving blood flow to the heart.
Nitroglycerin also has applications in blasting and detonating devices, playing a significant role in military and construction industries.
