What is a Paraformaldehyde (CH₂Oₓ)?
Paraformaldehyde is a polymer of formaldehyde, consisting of repeating units of formaldehyde molecules. It appears as a white crystalline powder or small solid granules. Paraformaldehyde is primarily used as a source of formaldehyde, serving as a stabilizing agent in formaldehyde solutions. It also plays an important role in the manufacture of resins and plastics. In addition, paraformaldehyde is used as a disinfectant in medical and chemical research applications.
Its uses are diverse, including as a hardening agent for resin products, adhesives, and the production of paints. However, like formaldehyde, it is highly toxic and is suggested to have carcinogenic properties, so care must be taken when handling it.
