What is a Picric acid?
Picric acid, with the chemical formula C₆H₂(NO₂)₃OH, is an aromatic nitro compound formally known as 2,4,6-trinitrophenol. It appears as a yellow crystalline solid, slightly soluble in water and alcohol, and has a bitter taste. Historically, it has been used as an explosive, dye, antiseptic, and in corrosion testing of metals. Picric acid is highly explosive and sensitive to friction, impact, and heat, requiring careful handling. It can form picrate salts with metals, which are even more unstable and hazardous. Due to these safety concerns, its use has become limited and replaced with safer alternatives in most applications.
In the past, picric acid was used in medicine for treating burns and skin conditions, but due to its toxicity and potential for skin irritation, it is rarely used today.
