What is a Picoline?
Picoline refers to a group of chemical compounds with the molecular formula C₆H₇N, consisting of a pyridine ring substituted with a methyl group. There are three isomers: 2-picoline (α-picoline), 3-picoline (β-picoline), and 4-picoline (γ-picoline), differing by the position of the methyl group on the pyridine ring. Picolines are colorless or slightly yellow liquids with a pungent, unpleasant odor. They are widely used as intermediates in organic synthesis, particularly in the production of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, dyes, and fragrances. Due to their ability to form coordination complexes with metal ions, picolines also find applications in catalysis and analytical chemistry.
Picoline compounds are toxic and should be handled with proper ventilation and protective equipment.
