What is a Hydantoin?
Hydantoin is a five-membered heterocyclic compound with the molecular formula C₃H₄N₂O₂. It features an imidazolidine-2,4-dione core and is commonly synthesized from urea and formic acid. Hydantoin serves as a key intermediate in pharmaceutical synthesis, with well-known derivatives like phenytoin (an anticonvulsant) and dantrolene (a muscle relaxant). Due to its chemical stability and structural versatility, hydantoin derivatives find applications not only in medicine but also in photography, resin curing agents, and preservatives.
