What is a Piperazine?
Piperazine is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₄H₁₀N₂, consisting of a six-membered saturated ring containing two nitrogen atoms at the 1 and 4 positions. It is a colorless or white crystalline solid, soluble in water and alcohols. Piperazine is best known for its use in medicine, particularly as an anthelmintic (deworming agent). In medical applications, piperazine has been used to treat parasitic worm infections such as ascariasis (roundworm) and enterobiasis (pinworm). It works by paralyzing the worms’ muscles, allowing them to be expelled from the body through the digestive tract. Although newer, more effective drugs are now commonly used, piperazine remains in use in some regions.
Beyond its medical use, piperazine is also utilized as a chemical intermediate in pharmaceutical synthesis, and in the production of polymers and surfactants.
