What is a Pyridine?
Pyridine is an aromatic heterocyclic compound with the chemical formula C₅H₅N. Its structure resembles benzene, but one of the six carbon atoms in the ring is replaced by a nitrogen atom. This nitrogen makes pyridine basic and more soluble in water than benzene. Pyridine is a colorless liquid with a strong, unpleasant odor and is miscible with many organic solvents. Pyridine is widely used as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, dyes, and resins. The pyridine ring is also present in biologically important compounds such as vitamin B₃ (niacin) and some antibiotics. Additionally, pyridine is used as a solvent and a catalyst in various chemical reactions.
It is also found in nature, for example in tobacco smoke, and its strong odor requires careful handling.
